MEAP & MME Data

MEAP

The state-mandated Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) tests are administered every October to students in grades 3-9.  All students in grades 3-8 take the Reading and Mathematics tests.  Students in grades 5 and 8 also take the Science test, and students in grades 6 and 9 also take the Social Studies test.  [The Writing test was temporarily eliminated in 2009/10, but will be added back in for grades 4 and 7 in 2010/11.]  The tests are based on the state's Grade Level Content Expectations (GLCE's) for each subject area.  Performance levels on the tests are set as follows:

  • Level 1 - Advanced Proficient
  • Level 2 - Proficient
  • Level 3 - Partially Proficient
  • Level 4 - Not Proficient

Scores are typically summarized as the percentage of students scoring at each level. The percentage of students scoring at levels 1 and 2 serves as the basis for calculating a school's Adequate Yearly Progress, as required by the federal No Child Left Behind legislation.

Detailed information about the MEAP, including sample tests and the list of Grade Level Content Expectations, is available on the state website:  www.michigan.gov/meap

MME (Michigan Merit Exam)

The Michigan Merit Exam (MME) is given in March to all 11th graders state-wide.  It is a combination of the American College Test (ACT), the ACT WorkKeys, and the Michigan Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies tests.  Taken together, these tests yield proficiency level scores similar to those for the MEAP in Reading, Writing, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies, based on the state's High School Content Expectations (HSCE's).  In addition, the test provides a college-reportable ACT score for students applying to college and a WorkKeys workplace readiness certification.

Detailed information about the MME is available on the state website:  www.michigan.gov/mme
